Fellow ADR section members,

I am writing to give you an update on the Low Bono section formation project. ADR executive committee members Alan Alhadeff, Paul McVicker and myself began an ADR focus group on reduced fee conflict resolution concepts two years ago. We were inspired by a Seattle University CLE Presentation on the low bono concept by attorney Jenny Anderson. We quickly found a group of lawyers and mediators interested in the topic and we have been holding meetings and exploring ideas. Ultimately our conversations led us to realize the topic was much broader than simply ADR, and we became interested in promoting the creation of a new WSBA section to better support and promote “low bono” concepts.

In the minds of some of us, the concept of Low Bono deeply embraces a variety of ADR concepts. For me, in particular it embraces ADR informed client counseling techniques for litigators with an increased awareness towards negotiation and early mediation. Another core concept we have identified is improving access to justice by connecting clients of moderate means to younger, older and any lawyer/mediator willing to provide reduced fee services. The new section will work to share and develop ideas to reduce the cost of litigation, help professionals connect with each other, and promote a mentorship program.

In addition to an update on this project our section has been supporting, I am writing to ask you to consider signing the attached petition supporting the new section. By signing, you would be committing to joining the section in 2014 ($30 annual section dues). Whether you join or not, a major thrust of Low Bono is mentoring and listserve advice. We already have a listserve which anyone may join, and I would encourage you to consider at least joining the Yahoo Group and contributing what you feel like.

Let me say that yes, the name Low Bono leaves something to be desired, and we have had many meetings about it. We remain open to any suggestions for an alternative name.

If you want to support the new section, you can email/fax the petition back to me (contact info is in the petition), or click here to sign an electronic petition.
